Clinical Supervision Process for Licensed
Professional Counselors (LPCs)

Objective
To facilitate professional growth, enhance clinical skills, ensure ethical practice, and provide support to Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) through systematic and structured supervision.

Initial Assessment & Goal Setting

Intake Interview

Understand the counselor's background, experiences, strengths, and areas of improvement.

Goal Setting

Collaboratively establish clear, measurable, and realistic goals for the supervision period. These goals should align with the counselor's professional development objectives and any identified areas of improvement.

Structured Meetings
  • Frequency

    Weekly or bi-weekly meetings, with flexibility to adjust based on the counselor’s needs and the supervisor’s assessment.

  • Duration

    Generally, sessions will last between 60 to 90 minutes.

    Combination of individual and group supervision, depending on availability and identified needs.

Direct
Observation

Periodically, the supervisor observes the counselor’s sessions (with client consent) to offer direct feedback.

Used to practice and enhance specific therapeutic techniques or to work through challenging clinical scenarios.

Discussion of Current Research and Literature

Ensuring evidencebased practices are being utilized and the counselor stays updated with advancements in the field.

Feedback

Constructive Feedback

Immediate and regular feedback helps the counselor address any concerns or challenges. This promotes growth and ensures client welfare.

Self-Assessment

Encourage the counselor to engage in reflective practices, allowing them to self-identify strengths and areas for growth.

Formal Evaluations

Periodic evaluations based on established goals and competence standards. This might be quarterly, bi-annually, or annually.

Ethical and Cultural Considerations

Ethical Consultation

Review and discuss any ethical dilemmas the counselor may encounter, referencing the ACA Code of Ethics or other relevant ethical guidelines.

Cultural Competence

Discuss diverse client backgrounds and ensure the counselor is approaching therapy with cultural sensitivity and awareness.

Documentation

Record Keeping

Maintain a record of all supervision sessions, including dates, duration, main discussion points, feedback provided, and any action items or recommendations

Confidentiality

Ensure all client information discussed during supervision remains confidential, adhering to legal and ethical guidelines.

Crisis Consultation

Availability

The supervisor should be available for emergency consultations should a critical issue or crisis arise in the counselor’s practice.
